Centrica to enlist & train 3,500 apprentices in green jobs: Centrica has pledged to recruit & instrudt about 3,500 apprentices over the following ten years to help the UK economy in supporting the green skills necessary to produce the net-zero goal.
The apprentices will obtain technical skills training along with the expertise they need for the role at one of the British Gas training academies located in Dartford, Hamilton, Thatcham & Leicester.
When qualified as ‘Smart Energy Experts’, they will be proficient in setting up & maintaining carbon efficient tech, containing EV charging points, heat pumps, hydrogen boilers as well as give energy efficiency advice to customers.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson accepted the news as he toured the Leicester British Gas Training Academy with Chancellor Rishi Sunak & revealed the 500th British Gas electric van, recognising what is believed to be the UK’s biggest EV fleet.
Additionally, 2 new British Gas electric vans will come from John O-Groats to Land’s End this week touring important cities, which include Glasgow, Salford, Wolverhampton & Cardiff, along with engineers inspiring people to obtain green skills through applying for an apprenticeship.
Mr Johnson stated: “Upskilling people around the country is crucial to scaling up the UK’s green industrial revolution over the next decade. Centrica’s commitment to hire & train 3,500 apprentices will build the next generation of clean energy experts, who will go on to install the electric vehicle charge points & heat pumps we need across the UK.
“Through our Plan for Jobs, we’re supporting more & more people from all backgrounds to start new careers in innovative industries & get the right skills for the future.”
The recruitment campaign by Centrica further looks to increase the amount of women working in STEM roles, additionally with the hope to guarantee 1/2 of recruits are women.
Chris O’Shea, Group Chief Executive, Centrica stated: “We’re creating thousands of highly skilled & well paid British jobs to ensure that we have a workforce that can help to make the transition to low carbon both hassle free & affordable for our customers & to support the government’s ambitious targets to make net-zero a reality.
“It’s important that we address the low representation of women who currently work in STEM roles, which is why we have a targeted campaign to attract & retain more female recruits. Together, we can create a more inclusive & sustainable future that supports our communities, our planet & each other.”
