London to present UK’s biggest e-scooter trial: Transport for London (TfL) has revealed plans for what alleges to be the largest trial of electric scooters throughout UK.
Tfl has kicked off a competition to select up to 3 operators to take part in a 12-month testing of rental e-scooters – the scooters will be able to be utilised on the road & in cycle lanes but not pavements.
The trials are part of a bigger plan to inspire people to choose greener forms of transport and enhance air quality in London & the operators will need to provide data to TfL and the boroughs to comprehend the impact of e-scooters on the city’s zero emission goals.
A geofencing technology will be used to lower speeds from a maximum of about 15mph down to 8mph in ‘go slow’ regions.
The total amount of e-scooters used in the trial has yet to be determined, but TfL anticipates to start with between 60 to 150 e-scooters per participating borough.
Nearly a third of the capital’s boroughs have already showed interest in being a part in e-scooter rental schemes, with the trial set to start this coming spring.
Michael Hurwitz, TfL’s Director of Transport Innovation, says: “Safety will be our number one priority during this e-scooter rental trial, which will be critical to providing us the data and insights we need to determine whether e-scooters are a viable part of a greener and healthier future for London.”
