Brixton is now home to a community fridge, where people can leave excess food for others to take.
The People’s Fridge, an initiative set up by local residents, activists and traders, aims to slash food waste, tackle food poverty and support sharing and sustainable thinking in the community.
Anyone can donate food or take from the fridge, which is stocked and cleaned every day.
Its creators hope it will make a significant difference – each year the UK throws away around £17 billion worth of food.
The average household discards an average of 24 edible meals a month, while 8.4 million people in the UK can’t afford to eat properly.
Bought and paid for by the public through a crowdfunding campaign that broke its £1,000 target in just three days, the fridge joins other similar projects launched in Spain, Germany and India.
The People’s Fridge is located at Pop Brixton.
More than one in five supermarket shoppers would like technology to help them reduce food waste.
